Central Prison houses male inmates in close custody and a variety of special populations including pre-trial safekeepers, death row offenders and those in long-term care medical care.

The facility is the main medical and mental health center for male inmates with a hospital complex that opened in 2011.   It also operates a diagnostic center that admits special population offenders to the prison system.

North Carolina's first state penitentiary opened at this site in 1884.
