Prison System Air Conditioning Upgrades

Prison System Air Conditioning Upgrades

A multi-year project is underway to air condition all housing areas in the North Carolina state prison system.  This involves upgrading 37 state prisons - including more than 100 buildings and more than 12,000 beds - that lack cooling systems, either partially or entirely. Retrofitting the state’s older correctional facilities with air-conditioning will offer safer and healthier environments for staff and offenders.  Air conditioning installation work is expected to be complete in 2026.
