Loan Repayment for Prison Medical Professionals

Medical professionals working in some North Carolina prisons may be eligible for federal loan repayment for their medical education through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). This federal program provides loan repayment for medical professionals who work at NHSC approved sites and in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).  

North Carolina Correctional Institutions (CI)
approved as NHSC sites:

  • Anson CI (male) - Polkton
  • Anson CI (female) - Polkton
  • Scotland CI- Laurinburg
  • Craggy Correctional Center - Asheville
  • Avery/Mitchell CI - Spruce Pine
  • Mountain View CI - Spruce Pine
  • Foothills CI - Morganton
  • Warren CI - Manson
  • Lumberton CI - Lumberton

These medical specialties are eligible for NHSC loan repayment:

  • Physician (MD or DO)
  • Dentist (general or pediatric)
  • Nurse Practitioner (primary care)
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife
  • Physician Assistant
  • Dental Hygienist
  • Psychologist (health service)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • Psychiatric Nurse Specialist
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
