Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution is a medium security facility housing male offenders. It sits on a 100-acre tract of land at the Avery and Mitchell County line. The prison is designed with three dormitory-style units, supported by a central administration building and 40 segregation cells.
Avery-Mitchell serves as a designated reentry facility focused on helping individuals successfully transition back into their communities. Working closely with local reentry councils, the facility connects individuals with valuable resources, support networks and opportunities that promote long-term success after release.
Through a partnership with Mayland Community College, Avery-Mitchell offers a variety of educational and workforce development programs designed to build practical skills and expand career opportunities. These include a two-year degree program in business managements, as well as high school equivalency, adult basic education and courses in computer applications, commercial cleaning and horticulture.
Individuals can also participate in inter-facility job assignments, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and apply what they've learned in real-world settings. Together, these efforts help prepare participants fr meaningful employment and a successful return to their communities.
