Pamlico Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility for adult males located in Bayboro, approximately 18 miles east of New Bern. There are two housing units for the regular population. The restrictive housing unit has 24 cells, as does the protective custody unit.

Pamlico prepares offenders for transition and re-entry by providing educational and personal growth opportunities. Pamlico Community College provides a variety of courses. Vocational classes include human service technology, masonry, horticulture technology, plumbing, carpentry, computer information technology, electrical systems technology, dental technology, adult basic education and high school equivalency, business administration, developmental education and basic skills and Focus on Freedom.

Pamlico Correctional Institution has a New Leash on Life program in partnership with the Carteret County Humane Society, Pamlico Pals for Paws, and other community supporters.

Pamlico Correctional opened in 1998 as a private prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America. In October 2000, the state assumed operational management and later purchased the facility from CCA.
