What: Governor’s Crime Commission Quarterly Meeting
When: Thursday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Governor’s Crime Commission, First Floor Conference Room, 1201 Front St., Raleigh
Who: Governor Roy Cooper will attend and hear reports on grant priorities and the status on current grants. New members will also be sworn in. Presenters include:
- Police Chief Thomas Bashore, Town of Nashville - The Hope Initiative.
- Stephanie Satkowiak, domestic violence specialist, Administrative Office of the Courts - Domestic Violence Training and Technical Assistance to District Court communities.
- Catherine Johnson, director of the Guilford County Family Justice Center. Family Justice Center - A one-stop shop for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse.
- James Pierce, project director for the Kids Making It Program, Wilmington. Kids Making It Program - Woodworking and mental health services (national award-winning model serving more than 400 underserved crime victims); Laying the Foundation for Success (a project that serves more than 1,000 court-involved and at-risk youth by providing new, skilled trades and summer job programs).
The Governor’s Crime Commission’s 38 members make recommendations to the governor and the secretary of the Department of Public Safety on federal grants for the state's criminal justice system, crime victims' services and juvenile justice. Federal block grants are awarded each year to government, education and social service agencies to start new and innovative programs and to continue efforts to reduce crime.
