The Governor’s Crime Commission - Special Committee on School Shootings is hosting a public forum on Thursday, Nov. 29 in Greensboro. This is the last of two forums designed to ensure that community voices and ideas are heard and incorporated into the Special Committee’s report. The Special Committee will compile comments and/or questions gathered at the public forums into recommendations that will be provided to the Governor’s Crime Commission in December 2018.
Survivors of Hurricane Florence who received initial rental assistance from FEMA may be eligible for continued rental assistance.
To be eligible to apply, survivors must meet the following conditions:
Today, the ReBuild NC program announced that the application center in Bertie County is slated to close on Nov. 29, 2018. However, impacted homeowners in this county may still be eligible for assistance and are strongly encouraged to apply for Hurricane Matthew Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding through the ReBuild NC program. In order to qualify for assistance through ReBuild NC at this time, the home must have been damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Public forums have been scheduled in both Greenville and Greensboro and are designed to ensure that community voices and ideas are heard and incorporated into the Special Committee’s report. As family and friends prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday period, the State Highway Patrol is also making preparations of its own in hopes of ensuring safe travel.
On Nov. 11 at approximately 2 p.m. at Bertie Correctional Institution, a confrontation between two offenders -- Bernaldo Torres (#1169757) and Quentin Holloway (#1301100) -- occurred inside a housing unit. Both offenders involved in the assault were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries received during this altercation. The incident is under internal investigation and local law enforcement was notified. DPS will cooperate with local law enforcement related to any criminal charges that may be filed.

On Nov. 9 at approximately 7:55 a.m. at Columbus Correctional Institution, offender Gregory Adams, Jr. (#0668860) was assaulted and killed at the facility.
Adams, 35, was stabbed in the neck area. Medical staff responded quickly and worked with local EMS personnel in an attempt to resuscitate the offender. Adams was transported to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced deceased at 8:40 a.m.
Are you a renter who was forced out of your home by Hurricane Florence and initially was eligible for rental assistance from FEMA? Do you still need FEMA’s help? If you are still eligible, you need take only two steps to get the help you need:
• Complete a Declaration of Continuing Need for Rental Assistance. This is a legal document mailed to all rental grant recipients 15 days after the rental assistance grant is received. Survivors with additional housing needs must complete the Declaration.

What: ReBuild NC will host a series of outreach events in Harnett County in the coming weeks, offering in-person assistance to Hurricane Matthew survivors who have not yet submitted a program application. Individuals are encouraged to dial 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment during an event with an application specialist who can assist them in completing their program application for assistance.
