Escaped inmate Stephen Singleton was captured this evening by New Hanover County sheriff's deputies. Singleton was driving a stolen vehicle and was injured when it crashed.  

One law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 61 hours, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. More than 20,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice since 1791.

Corrections and law enforcement officers are seeking inmate Stephen Singleton who escaped from New Hanover Correctional Center this morning. 

Singleton was discovered missing after a 5 a.m. count and is believed to have scaled a fence to leave the prison.

The State Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s assistance in locating the driver and/or vehicle that fatally struck and killed a 41-year old Spring Lake man as he walked along a Harnett County Road during the early morning hours of Monday, July 4.
