Department of Public Safety Chief Deputy Secretary W. David Guice today named Annie Harvey as the new Deputy Director of Prisons, effective today.
Harvey’s career spans more 30 years with DPS, and she will oversee daily operations of the 55 state prisons that house more than 36,500 inmates. The state prison system has a budget of approximately $1.2 billion and more than 17,000 employees.
“Annie’s greatest strengths are her creativity, drive, communications skills and leadership,” Guice said. “She thrives on challenges, particularly those that focus on the advancement of others.”
Harvey was promoted after serving as the coastal regional director for the Division of Prisons. She was responsible for overseeing the operations of 11 prisons housing minimum, close and medium custody adult male offenders and one prison housing adult female offenders. Prior to becoming the coastal regional director, she held the positions of female command manager, Piedmont regional director, warden, deputy warden and several additional positions within the correctional profession.
“Annie is a great addition to our prison leadership team,” said Deputy Secretary Gwen Norville. “Her experience in corrections makes her a natural fit to oversee operations and I welcome her to the new leadership role.”
During her career, Harvey has served as the national president of the Association of Women Executives in Correction (2010-2011); national vice-president of Executive Women in Correction; NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission member; NC Department of Correction Insurance Committee member; and Community in Schools board member (non-profit). She also has served as a National Institute of Correction consultant and technical advisor since 2007.
Harvey holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration (Magna Cum Laude) from Shaw University.
