More than 550 offenders were evacuated from Pamlico Correctional Institution in Bayboro today without incident after an electrical switch gearbox caught fire last night.
Though a backup generator powered the facility overnight, it was not powerful enough to provide heat and hot water in addition to emergency lighting. The offenders were transported to other prison facilities in the region.
No one was injured in the gearbox fire. Maintenance teams worked through the night to repair the equipment but concluded it must be replaced.
