RALEIGH—At approximately 10:07 a.m. today at Bertie Correctional Institution, an offender assaulted a correctional employee with a homemade weapon. The employee was taken to a local hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The assault happened in a housing area at the prison. The entire facility has been placed on indefinite lockdown.
The incident is under internal investigation and local law enforcement was contacted. DPS is cooperating with law enforcement and will pursue criminal prosecution against any offender involved in the assault. ### |
