An offender at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in a fight with another offender.
Kevin R. Taylor, Jr. (#1551841) was struck with a homemade weapon in a housing unit around 1:15 p.m. Staff responded and provided medical attention. The Greene County Sheriff’s Department was called. EMS arrived and pronounced him dead at 1:27 p.m.
Taylor, 23, was a close-custody offender housed in the regular population. He was serving a 5-year, 5-month prison sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was admitted to prison on Jan. 1, 2019 after he was convicted in Mecklenburg County.
The other offender who was involved in the incident was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Department of Public Safety is cooperating fully in the investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. The death is also under internal investigation.
The prison was placed on lockdown.
