Bertie Correctional Institution offender Nicholas Austin Langley (#1499757) has died after an apparent suicide.
He was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday. Life-saving measures were taken by responding staff, and emergency medical assistance was activated. He was pronounced deceased at 4:02 p.m.
Law enforcement was notified of the death and is investigating, as is common in these circumstances. The Department of Public Safety is cooperating fully in the investigation and is also conducting its own investigation.
Langley, 28, was convicted of second-degree murder in Pitt County in 2016 and sentenced to 15 to 20 years. He was projected to be released in November 2033.
