Secretary of Adult Correction Todd Ishee has named Gregory Groff as the new warden of Richmond Correctional Institution in Hoffman.

Groff, a 26-year corrections veteran, has served as Richmond Correctional’s associate warden for custody and operations since July 1, 2019.

“Warden Groff has an impressive record wherever he’s served — as a veteran in our armed forces and as someone who’s worked his way up through our state correctional system,” Ishee said. “He has demonstrated leadership abilities at every stop in his career, and I have no doubt he will prove to be an exemplary warden.”

Groff earned commendations for combat actions in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He worked in local law enforcement before starting with the correctional system in 1996 as a correctional officer at Hoke Correctional Institution.

Groff was promoted to sergeant in 1999, lieutenant in 2005 and captain in 2007. He was named assistant superintendent of custody and operations at Randolph Correctional Center in 2018 before coming to Richmond a year later.

He has served with the Prisons Emergency Response, Drug Interdiction and Regional Intelligence teams. His educational accomplishments include a Master of Science degree from N.C. Wesleyan University, a Bachelor of Science from Fayetteville State University and an Associate of Applied Science from Sandhills Community College, all in criminal justice.

Groff is a member of the American Correctional Association and a member of Team Red, White and Blue, a national nonprofit organization that connects veterans with their communities through physical and social activity.
