Yesterday evening, Wisezah Buckman was convicted for the October 12, 2017, murder of Correctional Officer Justin Smith, Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon, Correction Enterprise Manager Veronica Darden, and Maintenance Mechanic Geoffrey Howe, who were all attacked and killed while performing their duties as public servants at Pasquotank Correctional.
While we continue to mourn their loss, I am grateful for the fair and unbiased judgment of the jury and the work of the prosecutors who have worked diligently to ensure those responsible for the deaths of our friends and colleagues are being held accountable. We continue to keep their families, co-workers, and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
We remain committed to our mission to the safety of our staff, those in our custody, and the citizens of North Carolina. Additional updates will be provided once the judge completes the sentencing phase, which is scheduled to begin next week.
