Central Prison offender dies in apparent suicide

A pre-trial offender being held at Central Prison, Charles Judy (#1206985), has died of an apparent suicide.

Judy, 52, was found unresponsive in his hospital cell late Wednesday afternoon.  Prison medical staff performed life-saving procedures, and EMS responded, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Law enforcement and the N.C. Office of Chief Medical Examiner have been notified and are investigating, as required in these circumstances. The Department of Adult Correction is cooperating fully and conducting its own investigation.

Judy was a pre-trial offender being housed as a safekeeper for Buncombe County.
