Today the NC Department of Adult Correction transferred 151 men from Craggy Correctional Center in Asheville to three other prisons, completing the movement of people from prisons in storm-impacted areas of Western North Carolina. NCDAC officials anticipate no additional transfers from storm-affected locations.
This week, corrections staff temporarily transferred 2,190 offenders from five correctional facilities in western North Carolina. Hurricane Helene did not flood the facilities, but repairs to electrical and water utilities serving the prisons are expected to take several weeks or longer.
All incarcerated people relocated from affected prisons are safe at their temporary locations. NCDAC is working on longer-term housing assignments for relocated offenders until utilities are restored.
The five affected locations are:
- Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution, Spruce Pine
- Black Mountain Substance Abuse Treatment Center for Women, Black Mountain
- Craggy Correctional Center, Asheville
- Mountain View Correctional Institution, Spruce Pine
- Western Correctional Center for Women, Swannanoa.
The online Offender Locator will be updated within 24 hours to indicate where individual offenders are temporarily rehoused. The duration of the relocations will depend on the time required to complete utility repairs.
