 The North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission suspended the ABC permits for a Charlotte business, Club Onyx, on November 27. The suspension came as a result of a review of sworn statements submitted by special agents of North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers, as well as a notarized statement from the Mecklenburg County Health Director. Club Onyx, at 5300 Old Pineville Road, Suite 126, Charlotte, has held ABC permits since March 2005.
Prisons’ leadership is consolidating some of its operations to help mitigate the surge of COVID-19 in North Carolina and its impact on the prison system. This allows the temporary reassignment of staff to prisons in need of additional medical and security personnel to handle COVID outbreaks. “I am grateful we have such a dedicated, hard-working staff who help out their colleagues as we continue to battle this first-in-a-century pandemic,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “They are heroes.”
An offender participating in Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) who absconded from her approved residence on Oct. 30 has been apprehended in Raleigh.  Charita Andrews (#1074799) was serving an active sentence for Felony Possession with Intent to Sell. She previously had a projected release date from prison of Nov. 8, 2020. She now faces escape charges. Andrews was apprehended by officers from the DPS Special Operations and Intelligence Unit and transported to the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh.

An Alexander Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital. “His death is saddening. We are working hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.” The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 9, when he was hospitalized. His condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 22.
An offender participating in Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) who absconded from his residence on November 13 has been apprehended. James W. Jacobs (#0204385) was serving an active sentence for Habitual Felon and Breaking and Entering Vehicles. He had a projected release date of June 23, 2021. He is in the custody of Officers from the Division of Community Corrections. 
An Anson Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital. “Her death is saddening, and we continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.” The offender was hospitalized on Nov. 10, tested for COVID-19, and positive results were received on Nov. 16. Her condition worsened, and she died on Nov. 18.
A team of American Correctional Association auditors has recommended accreditation be awarded to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety for its prison administration operations, a high achievement in what is the first step to full accreditation of the prison system.

The State Highway Patrol recognized the exemplary work of several members today during an awards ceremony held at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.  The 50 members and/or districts that were recognized today continue the Patrol’s long-standing commitment to strive for excellence within our communities.
