A team of American Correctional Association auditors has recommended accreditation be awarded to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety for its prison administration operations, a high achievement in what is the first step to full accreditation of the prison system.
The State Highway Patrol recognized the exemplary work of several members today during an awards ceremony held at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. The 50 members and/or districts that were recognized today continue the Patrol’s long-standing commitment to strive for excellence within our communities.
Following an ALE investigation, a night club’s ABC permits have been summarily suspended after four patrons and two off-duty police officers were shot in the parking lot.
On Thursday, November 12, 2020, ALE special agents responded to Remedies, on Union Road, for a shooting after two Gastonia police officers working off-duty security called for assistance. Both officers, along with four patrons, were struck by gunfire and all were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice is actively seeking an offender serving a portion of his active sentence outside of prison who has absconded from his residential location in Monroe. The offender was participating in the Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) initiative.

The grant brings the total to more than $70.5 million to reimburse NCDOT for Hurricane Florence-related expenses. FEMA’s total share for the projects is $49.8 million and the state’s share is $20.7 million.

A Tabor Correctional Institution offender with pre-existing medical conditions, who tested positive for COVID-19, has died at a hospital.
“His death is tragic, and we continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “The health and safety of the staff and the offender population is our top priority.”
The offender tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 27 He was hospitalized on Oct. 28. His condition worsened, and he died on Nov. 9.

An offender participating in Extending the Limits of Confinement (ELC) who walked away from his residence has been apprehended.
Darryl Cordell was taken into custody by law enforcement in South Carolina, who transported him to a local detention center. Cordell was serving an active sentence for Habitual Felon, Felony Breaking and Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, Open Container and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He had a projected release date of March 20, 2021.
On Sunday, November 8, at approximately 2:15 pm, an aircraft with the State Highway Patrol’s Aviation Section crashed during a training mission. The crash occurred near the SHP’s hangar facility on Tryon Rd. in Wake County. As the helicopter was returning to the hangar facility, the aircraft went down striking several trees on its descent. As a result, the aircraft came to rest on Tryon Rd. in an upright position.
