Social Work Services
The Social Work Services team utilizes the core values of social work - social justice, competence, and the dignity of the person - to provide evidence-based services to offenders.
The team provides expertise and specialized assistance to offenders with behavioral health needs, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and complex medical needs. Social workers coordinate with providers and resources in the community to develop aftercare plans. In addition, they provide individualized care for offenders, ensuring they have access to benefits and providers, such as Medicaid, disability benefits, behavioral health providers, employment resources, and much more.
Medicaid Expansion
With the passage of Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina on December 1, 2023, it is estimated that up to 80% of individuals returning to the community are now eligible for Medicaid. Access to Medicaid is known to improve health outcomes and decrease recidivism. Incarcerated individuals can apply for Medicaid up to 90 days prior to their projected release date.

Behavioral Health Aftercare Services
Social Workers work with the Local Management Entities/Managed Care Organizations (LME/MCO’s) to link individuals releasing from prison to behavioral health services in their communities. Each LME/MCO also has a crisis line that is available 24/7.

Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) Services
Social workers work with behavioral health staff and case managers to provide enhanced services to offenders with IDD, including working with individuals to create an individualized treatment plan that addresses the improvement of life skills. Each individual with IDD meets with a social worker prior to release to develop an individualized aftercare plan.
NCDAC partners with the Alliance of Disability Advocates North Carolina to aid individuals with IDD during their transition from prison to the community.
